Does mewing actually work? Can it ruin your face shape?

Spread the love

The modern era is all about trying new techniques. Whether it is in the field of developing new machines or it is about developing new medical techniques. Mewing is getting popular these days; you can see several videos on YouTube and other platforms explaining the technique and its pros and cons. But there is no scientific proof behind this so popular mewing. Let us take a dive into the world of this technique and see whether mewing actually works or not.

What is mewing?

Mewing is a DIY (do it yourself) technique that involves tongue placement at a proper place in your mouth for facial restructuring. While this technique seems to have exploded on social media including YouTube but mewing is not technically new as it has a history. The credit of inventing mewing technique goes to Dr. John Mew, an orthodontist who first used the term orthotropic (an exercise that focuses on defining the jawline and facial structure). His son Mike mew is taking his invention farther as he is also a practitioner of orthotropic.

How to Mew?

The technique of mewing involves flattening out the tongue against the roof of the mouth while closing your lips and setting the teeth together. The tongue must relax entirely against the roof of the mouth starting from front to the back of it. If a person is mewing correctly, he/she must feel the pressure at the middle of the face, jaw and chin. With the passes of time, this technique is said to help improve the aesthetic of your jawline and improve the alignment of your teeth and chin. This may take several months or years in getting used to relaxing the tongue in this position.

Does mewing actually work?

As the technique seems to be true and effective after watching the hyped videos and description written on the websites, there is a catch with the technique- it may take several years to see results as said. Some people and some anecdotal reports say that mewing can help resolve:

  • Speech impediments
  • Sleep apnea and snoring
  • Swallowing and breathing issues
  • Sinusitis

Though there are no proven researches and results in support of scientific benefits of mewing, social media platforms have given this technique hype. When you search on YouTube, you will get results of people who tried the technique and purportedly get the results as well as videos of some people who debunk the mewing craze. Though mewing is not so dangerous, there are not enough proofs to support the craze.  You can try the technique but be ready to witness little to no results.

Orthodontic experts fear that people who are in need of orthodontic treatment or surgery for example, for a person who require Maxillofacial surgery might try mewing for a long period to fix the issue on their own and may increase the problem due to lack of medical aid. It is better to see a doctor if you are facing any issue with your mouth or jaw.

Scientifically proven face shaping treatments

Instead of mewing, one must go through the scientifically accepted facial restructuring treatments which include contouring, facial sculpting, dermal fillers and botulinum toxin (Botox) injections. Another technique called Radiofrequency may be used for facial shaping. Facial surgery or contouring may be more effective if you wish to realign your jaw for medical or cosmetic reasons. Hence, it is best to consult an orthodontist for mouth and jaw-related issues including pain as well as the restructuring of the face and realigning of the jawline.
