Everyone loves Japanese anime but live action movies to these anime are mostly considered bad by audience. This might be because people started comparing these movies with the anime and obviously it will never match the uniqueness of the cartoon characters.

Disney live action remakes like The Lion King, The Jungle Book are very famous among the public but no one talks about Japanese live action anime adaptation movies.

People think that every anime to live action movies are bad but this is not the case. Here in this article I have included some Japanese anime to live action movies which are well praised by the critics and audience worldwide.

10. Blade of the Immortal (2017)

Blade of Immortality is a Japanese live action movie based on anime series of the same name. It is a samurai film which was released in 2017 by Warner Bros. Pictures in Japan.

The story is based on a immortal samurai named Manji who becomes the bodyguard of an orphan girl named Rin Asano. It is a journey of revenge of these two against the members of samurai group who killed the child’s parents.

In the movie Manji is shown as a dark hero and there are multiple bloody scenes in the movie.

The movie received positive reviews from the critics but was not welcomed by the audience maybe because people might be comparing it with the anime. But movie is worth watching because the director has handled the fight scenes accurately and the relationship between the two main characters was appreciable.

Despite good reviews from the critics movie only made $7.16 million worldwide, which was very below its expectation. Blade of Immortality received a good 86% critics reviews and 69% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

9. Parasyte: Part 1 (2014)

Parasyte: Part 1 is Japanese science fantasy part superhero, part horror film which was released in 2014. It is a live action adaptation to the manga and anime series under the same name.

According to the plot a mysteries alien race invade the earth and started taking control of human brain by infecting them. When one of them tries to infect the high school student named Shinichi Izumi, it makes some error and ends up in controlling only the boy right hand.

The movie received mixed reviews from the critics but audience like this movie. One of the editors of Japan Times stated that the film adaptation if Parasyte was unable to find a sweet spot between black comedy and serious sci-fi horror.

According to Peter Debruge of Variety, the film boasts a sleek, shadowy look, though it brightens up considerably when Shinichi’s at school, which is where the big showdown unspools.

Movie also received a good audience score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed approximately $9.7 million worldwide.

8. Your Lie in April (2016)

Your Lie in April also known as Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso in Japanese is a 2016 romantic film released by Toho in Japan. It is a live action remake of the Japanese manga and anime series of the same name.

This anime is a story of a famous pianist, Kousei Arima, who part ways with his musical life after the death of his mother.

Two years later, while he was still living colorless life with his two friends, he met a beautiful violinist, Kaori Miyazono.

Kaori changed his messy life and encouraged him to face the music again.

Movie was loved by the audience and actors acting were also appreciated. According to one users review, the movie had original script, very nice classic type music; acting is kind of accurate for the ages portrayed. The kind of movie you do not forget once you have seen it.

Movie was love worldwide by critics as well as audience and made a gross income of $11.44 million.

7. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky which is better known as Story of Ricky is a 1991 martial arts film based on the Japanese manga and anime series named Riki-Oh.

Movie is a story of Ricky Ho Lik Wong who is a young man with superhuman strength. He was send to the prison filled with corrupt officials. He uses his martial arts in the prison to clean up the corrupt system.

The movie well acclaimed by the critics for its acting, story and extremely brutal violence. Everything was good with the movie expect its extremely poor dubbing in English.

The movie received an awesome critics (89%) and audience score (85%) on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie is also considered in one of the best cult films.

Movie made a total gross income of $5.9 million only in Japan.

6. Kimi ni Todoke (2010)

Kimi ni Todoke also known as “From Me to You” is a live action movie adaptation of Japanese romantic manga and anime series of the same name.

The movie was released in Japan in 2010 and in 2011 it was screened at the 10th Asian Film Festival of Dallas.

Movie is story of a girl named Sawako who resembles just like the movie ring girl named “Sadako”. She is avoided by her classmates because they fear her. But one of the popular boys at school approaches and befriends her and their love story begins.

The film was appreciated for its music and was loved in Japan. Film made a total of approximately $18 million gross income worldwide.

5. Death Note 2: The Last Name (2006)

Another movie in the series of live action Japanese films is Death Note 2: The Last Name. This is second movie of the series based on the popular anime and manga series named Death Note.

The movie revolves around a student named Light Yagami who decides to erase the crime from this world with the help of a recently discovered otherworldly notebook that kills everyone whose name is written on it. He also evades his capture from the police force led by an intelligent criminal detective “L”.

The movie is continuation of the first movie after Light joins the police task force and tries to avert suspicion from him and kill L.

The movie was produced by Nippon Television and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures Japan in 2006.

Movie received positive reviews from the critics and fans. Death Note: The Last Name was a huge success and grossed approximately $54 million worldwide.

It also received good rating of above 80% by both critics and audience on Rotten Tomatoes.

4. Alita: Battle Angel

Alita: Battle Angel is a live action movie adaptation of Japanese 1990s manga and anime series named Gunnm and its original video adaptation named Battle Angel.

This movie produced by James Cameroon is a cyberpunk-action film which stars Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly and Rosa Salazar in lead roles.

A story of a young cyborg girl named Alita who awakes in a new body with no memory of her past and set out discover her destiny.

Movie was huge success worldwide with a total estimated gross income of approximately $405 million. Movie was loved by the fans but was given mixed reviews by the critics.

It was appreciated for its actor’s performance, fighting sequences but criticized for its screenplay.

Whatever critics say but I have watched the movie and I loved it. The story is good and fighting sequence was awesome. It is a must watch action movie of 2019.

It was given a mediocre critics rating of 61% and an awesome audience rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

3. Bunny Drop (2011)

Bunny Drop is a 2011 live action adaptation of Japanese manga and anime series of the same name.

Bunny Drop also known as Usagi Drop is a story of a single office working man who adopts his six years aunt and raises her as his own daughter.

The movie is cute, simple emotional drama which touched everyone’s heart at its release. It receives a good user rating of 7.3 on IMDB.

Despite some negative reviews by some critics who cited it as a overly fluffy drama, the movie touched audience hearts and grossed approximately $6.6 million only in Japan.

If someone loves emotional family drama then this movie is a best live action adaptation in that category and worth watching.

2. Rurouni Kenshin: Origins (2012)

One of the best Japanese anime to live action movies is Rurouni Kenshin: Origins. The movie was released in 2012 and it is an action adventure film based on the manga and anime series of the same name.

It tells a story of fictional events that took place in the Meiji period of Japan. It is a story of wanderer named Himura Kenshin, who was the well known assassin during the Bakumatsu war, but after the war he wanders the countryside offering protection to anyone in need so that he can atone for the murders he committed as an assassin.

The movie was distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. and made a gross income of approximately $61.7 million even before its release in US and Philippines. If including both US and Philippines too then movie might have crossed $80 million.

Rurouni Kenshin: Origins is one of the highest grossing Japanese live action movies in history.

Movie was loved by audience worldwide and received an excellent audience score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Death Note top the list of best Japanese live action movies with both critics as well as audience ratings.

It is a first movie in the series of two movies. In this movie Light Yagami, a college student started killing criminals with the help of the otherworldly notebook which kills everyone whose name is written on its pages.

But as time passes Light becomes corrupt and started killing anyone who gets in his path. When no police force is able to catch him an intelligent detective accepts the mission to catch him.

Movie was the massive him in Singapore and was well received worldwide. It made a total gross income of approximately $37 million worldwide.

Death note was also given a good rating by critics (78%) and audience (85%) on Rotten Tomatoes.
