The golden age of Cartoon Network was the 90s. This was the time when some of the greatest shows and cartoon characters were created.

The animated shows like Tom & Jerry, Batman, Superman and many more were created during this period.

People who were born during this time might feel lucky because they have watch some of the greatest creations of animation live in front of them.

Here in this article I have included some of the most popular 90s Cartoon Network shows which I used to watch during my childhood. I have also shared a link where you can also watch these shows for free, if you are interested.

20. The Jetsons (1962-1963)

Another Hanna-Barbera Productions creation is The Jetsons. It was the counterpart of the Flintstones series. The Flintstones story takes place in the past Stone Age and The Jetsons story takes place in the future Space Age.

The show was aired in 1962 on ABC and during 1995 the rerun was aired on the Cartoon Network.

The story of this animated series revolves around the family named The Jetsons. They live in Orbit City whose architecture is above the ground in air. The house and buildings are raised above the ground in the sky using long adjustable columns.

The main character is George Jetson and other characters include his wife Jane, teenage daughter Judy, a son named Elroy and a robot maid named Rosie. The family also has a pet dog named Astro.

The show is a comedy family drama which is trying to show how human will live in future. Cars will be turned into planes and everyone will have devices which will save labor.

The show was good for the children’s because of its tech education qualities.


19. The Mask: Animated Series (1995-1997)

The Mask: Animated Series was made when the movie Mask was super hit. After the successful movie the series was aired in 1995 on CBC.

The series had three seasons with total fifty-four episodes. The last episode of the third season was aired in 1997. Some of the episode of this series was written by John Arcudi who was the former writer of the original Mask comics.

The plot was similar as shown in the film where Stanley is a bank clerk and finds the ancient mask in the river and becomes The Mask.

Different episodes have different stories, but all of them were hilarious.

No one could ever say that we had enough of mask. It is a series which can be enjoyed anywhere and anytime.

In this cartoon series Stanley is shown a brainy one and often helps him out of the dangerous situations.

18. Popeye the Sailor (1960-1962)

Popeye was the animated character which was created by which was created by E. C. Segar.

In 1960 American Television animated series with the name Popeye the sailor was made and released by the Paramount Studios. The series consists of total 220 episodes.

The whole series was also aired on Cartoon Network during the late 90s.

The story revolves around a sailor named Popeye who looks weak and small but when he eats spinach he becomes as strong as a superhero.

 During each episode Popeye is trying to impress Olive Oyl, who sometimes is also shown as his girlfriend.

There is also a negative character named Bluto whose name was later changed to Brutus.

Brutus is a heavy muscular man who always tries to take advantage of Olive forcefully.

In the start Popeye is beaten by the Brutus but as he eats his Spinach, he destroys Brutus.

The show actually helped kids in eating spinach which was never loved by them.

17. Johnny Bravo (1997-2004)

The series revolves around the character named Johnny Bravo, who was compared with Elvis Presley because of his voice.

Johnny Bravo is a dumb blond egomaniac muscular man who lives with his mother. Johnny is a womanizer who tries to impress every woman he meets to impress so that they can go on a date with him.

He is rejected every time in a comic way and sometimes even beaten by the girls.

The shows main focus is on adult comedy and pop culture.

The shows became very famous among the kids and even adults because guys always get rejected by girls in real life also.

People find it easy to relate him with their own lives, but in a funny way. One more thing its spiky hairstyle was also loved by some dudes.

16. The Powerpuff Girls (1998-2005)

Everyone remember those three cute girls fighting crime and defeating Mojo Jojo every now and then.

The Powerpuff Girls is an American superhero cartoon series which was very popular during the 90s. It was created by Craig McCracken and was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1998.

It was the last cartoon series produced by the Hanna-Barbera Productions because the company got closed in 2001 after co-founder William Hanna’s death.

The series is centered on three kindergarten-aged girls named Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup. These girls have super powers and live in a fiction city of Townsville with their father.

Their father or creator is a scientist named Professor Utonium who made these girls in an experiment.

These girls fight crime and defeat monsters in this fictional city. They are often called by the mayor of the city for help against criminals.

The most famous criminals in this series are a mad monkey named Mojo Jojo.

There are total six seasons with 78 episodes. The show ended in 2002.

The show was very successful and won many awards like it won two Primetime Emmys and two Annie Awards.


15. Ed, Edd n Eddy (1999-2008)

Ed, Edd and Eddy is an Canadian American animated comedy series which was aired on Cartoon Network in 1999.

The show was created by Danny Antonucci and he wanted it to make characters which resemble 1940s cartoon characters.

The story of the series revolves around three preteen boys named Ed, Edd and Eddy who lives in a fictional town of Peach Creek. Eddy is their leader and the trio always invents crazy schemes to make money so that they could purchase their favorite confection, jawbreakers.

They plan always fails and they have to face humiliations afterwards.

The show was very successful among the kids, teens and adult during its 11 year run.

The show received excellent critic reviews and became the Cartoon Network’s most successful original animated Series.

Ed, Edd and Eddy also won a Reuben Award, two Leo Awards and a SOCAN Awards.

The show had total 6 seasons with 70 episodes.

14. The Flintstones (1960-1966)

The show had six seasons with the total of 166 episodes. The show was originally aired on ABC in the 1960. The last episode of the sixth season was aired in 1966.

The show was also aired on Cartoon Network in the late 90s because of it extremely high popularity among kids and adults.

The plot of the show takes [place during the Stone Age. There are two families The Flintstones and their neighbors The Rubbles.

The story main focus is on the Flintstones which includes Fred Flintstone (main character and a father), Wilma Flintstones (Fred’s wife), Pebbles Flintstones (their infant daughter) and their pets.

Their pets include a dinosaur named Dino who acts like a dog and Baby Puss who is a saber toothed cat.

The show takes place during the Stone Age but have added feature and technologies which resembles mid 20th century.

For example, they have cars made of stones, house made of stones and animals which acts like dogs and cats.

One most funny thing is that they have cars but they drive it using their legs.

It is mostly a comic family drama happening during the Stone Age.

The show was well acclaimed all over the world and became the first animated series to hold a prime time slot on television.

For three decades, The Flintstones was the most financially successful and longest running animated TV series until The Simpsons, which was aired in late 1989.

13. The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (1996-1997)

The remake of original Jonny Quest (1964) was made Hanna-Barbera in 1996 and was broadcasted on Cartoon Network.

The name of the show was changed from Jonny Quest to The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.

The plot was similar where the boy named Jonny Quest accompanies his scientist father, Hadji Singh, Jessie Bannon and bodyguard Race Bannon to investigate legends and mysteries.

It was one of the greatest adventure animated show of its time.

The show has two seasons with total of fifty two 22 min episodes. If you love adventure and mysteries you should surely watch this show.


12. Scooby-Doo, Where are You! (1969-1970)

Scooby-Doo, Where are You! Is an American mystery comedy television series which was created by Hanna-Barbera in 1969 for CBS.

It had two seasons which ended in 1970 and later in 1978 they also aired the third season.

The series story centers on the group of teenager friends along with one dog named Scooby-Doo. They travel to different places in their green and blue van, solving mysteries and in the end catching the culprit.

They are like investigators who are called to solve mysteries involving local legends.

The character includes Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers and Scooby-Doo.

Shaggy and Scooby are the most hilarious and coward characters in the show. But somehow running from horrors them mistakenly every time catches the culprit.

11. Dexter Laboratory (1996-2003)

Another famous and most loved cartoon show all over the world is Dexter Laboratory.

No one forget that small boy genius cartoon with specs named Dexter and his awesome laboratory which he keeps hidden from his parents.

Dexter had a secret laboratory in the basement of his house where he makes some extraordinary inventions and experiments.

But his older sister “Dee Dee” always finds a way to reach his lab and ruins his experiments. Every kid who watched the show somehow relates Dee Dee with their own sisters.

Even our sisters used to reveal our secrets to parents and sometimes even ruin our work. This is the reason why this show was loved by every school kid.

This American television series was created by Genndy Tartakovsky in 1996. The show was launched on Cartoon Network with two seasons and total of 52 episodes which ran on cartoon Network till 1999.

Later in 2001, two more seasons were made but under different creators because original creator was busy in creating Samurai Jack.

10. The Road Runner Show (1966-1973)

The Road Runner Show is an animated anthology cartoon series which includes two characters named the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. The series is a part of the show named Looney Tunes.

The show was produced by Warner Bros. Cartoon and was aired from 1966 to 1968 on CBS and afterwards on the ABC. The first two seasons was aired on the CBS and last two were aired on ABC.

The Bugs Bunny Show was also combined with the same show after some seasons.

In its plot, the cunning and hungry Coyote tries to catch and eat the Road Runner, which is a fast running ground bird, but failing every time.

The comic part is that he does not try to catch the bird normally like other animals do but instead uses some complex science traps, bombs and other machinery.

The catching machinery or items are often delivered to him through mail and each order has the same company name on its product, Acme.

The trap always backfires and mostly results in trapping and hurting him instead of the bird.

The show was the masterpiece of that decade.

Later because of its growing property it was also aired on the Cartoon Network in some countries.

It was the American superhero animated series which was based on the DC comic character Superman.

The story was taken from the comic where Superman is a last son of the planet Krypton who was send to the earth by his parents as a small child because their planet was destroying.

He was adopted on the earth by a family who has no children. He has superhero powers and used them to safe people of the city and defeating villains.

The show was well acclaimed worldwide from all type of audience.

8. Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999-2002)

According to me Courage the Cowardly Dog was the first cartoon horror series I have watched which was actually dark with surreal atmosphere and humor.

I believe many horror comedy movies all over the world must have been made after watching this cartoon series.

This American horror comedy series was created by John R. Dilworth in 1996. The first episode was piloted on What a Cartoon! and was highly acclaimed by everyone.

The segment was so good that it was nominated for the Academy Awards but lost to Wallace and Gromit’s A Close Shave.

This successful short film was the green light for the show to become a series.

The series was made and was premiered on Cartoon Network in 1999. The series had total of four seasons with thirteen episodes each. The last episode of last season was aired in November 2002.

The show includes a pink dog named Courage, who lives with two elderly couples in a farmhouse. The farmhouse is in a desert and there is no other house or building nearby.

In the each episode the trio has to face aliens, monsters, demons, zombies or anything paranormally supernatural.

Courage is actually a coward dog but somehow finds the strength to bring their owners from the awkward situations.

The idea is to introduce a pilot of a new comer cartoon show and make the whole original series if it gets positive reviews.

The show was created by Fred Seibert and consisted total of 48 short cartoons which later originated in popular series.

Some of the famous Cartoon Network Shows of the 90s were from this show.

Famous shows like Dexter Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Sheep in the Big City, Johnny Bravo as well as Fox’s Family Guy are originated from this series.

There are total 48 seven minute episodes which were run through two years course of time. The show was produced by the Hanna-Barbera Productions and was aired on Cartoon Network.


6. Spider-Man (1994-1998)

There are five seasons in total with sixty-five episodes.

The series and the character Spider-Man is among the most popular superheroes loved by kids all over the world.

After its release and success there was no stop for this character to appear in movies, video games and toys.

Its villains like Green Goblin, Mysterio, Venom, Doctor Octopus etc also gained fame and appeared in different movies.

5. The Adventures of Tintin (1991-1992)

The Adventures of Tintin was the detective animated series, written and animated in France by Ellipse Animation. The same series was also written and animated in Canada by Nelvana International.

The series is based on the Belgian comic under the same name which was created by the artist named Georges Prosper Remi.

The show was aired in France in 1992 on France 3. It was also also aired on Cartoon Network in different countries like America, New Zealand and India in between 1995 to 2000.

The story revolves around Tintin who is a private detective and a teenager. He along with his dog Snowy solves mysteries, fight crimes and sometimes even gun down mafia.

There would be no one who have watched this show and said that he did not like it. It was like watching cartoon version of Sherlock Holmes in the 90s.

There are three seasons and total of 39 episodes.

I will highly recommend watching this show because you are missing something legendary.

Steven Spielberg 2011 movie The Adventure of Tintin is based on this TV series.


4. SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron (1993-1995)

SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron was created by Christian and Yvon Tremblayin 1993. The series has two seasons with total 25 episodes.

The story of the series takes place in a fictional city named Megakat City, who population is filled with anthropomorphic felines, known as ”kats”. In easy language the people in this city are human like cats.

There are two demoted fighter Jet pilots, who decides to make their own jet and fight the crimes in the city like vigilantes.

In every episode they fight different villains without getting caught by the police force called the Enforcers.

The show was originally aired on the TBS Superstation but later in the late 90s it was also aired again on Cartoon Network.

I loved this show and have not missed a single episode during that time. This is my most watched 90s Cartoon Network Show ever.

The show was one of the best shows of the 90s and its character Bugs Bunny became the cultural icon.

I don’t think there would be anyone in this world who doesn’t love Tom and Jerry. This show brings back childhood memories, right.

 Tom and Jerry is an American animated short film series created in 1940. The series was created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who both was American animator at that time.

The show was originally aired on MGM but later during the end of the 90s it was aired on Cartoon Network.

The series became very successful because it was created on the real life idea of cat and mouse. Every kid might have seen cats chasing mouse in their homes. So the creator gets an idea to create a cartoon which shows the rivalry between a cat and a mouse, in a most hilarious way ever possible.

In the series, a cat named Tom always tries to catch a mouse named Jerry. But Jerry is a very smart mouse and he always finds a way to escape from the grasp of Tom.

There are total 161 theatrical shorts films produced by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and were featured on Cartoon Network.

The best thing about this series that it never showed any blood, vulgar and aggressive scenes because the main focus of this cartoon was to attract kids.

Later numerous movies and video games were also made on Tom and Jerry. The new live action/animated hybrid film of Tom & Jerry is all set to be released in 2021.

According to me, this silent show is among the legends of cartoon shows ever made.
